Dry Eye Treatments: Omega-3 Supplements
While artificial tears or ointments are common dry eye treatments, studies suggest that eating omega-3 fatty acid foods can also alleviate this problem. Omega-3 oils appear to improve the function of the meibomian glands in the eye that produce the oily component of tears. Improving the functioning of these glands can reduce dry eye symptoms. They are found naturally in fatty fish (such as salmon, sardines, and anchovies) and flaxseeds. Omega-3 fatty acids can also be added as nutritional supplements (capsules or tablets). Check with your ophthalmologist if omega-3 supplements are right for you.
