Glaucoma diet tips

A healthy diet, a preventive measure for pathologies such as glaucoma, cataract, AMD or certain retinopathies.


According to the doctor, a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and flavonoids, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin protects against free radicals and is therefore recommended as a possible preventive factor for glaucoma and other eye diseases, such as cataract, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and certain retinopathies.

Among the vitamins with the highest antioxidant power: C, E, and B1.

According to Dr. Mercedes Aguirre Mercedes Aguirre, among the vitamins with the most antioxidant power, C, which is found in a wide variety of foods, especially in citrus fruits and vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli or cauliflower, as well as in tomatoes and peppers, stands out; E, also present in green leafy vegetables and vegetable oils, wheat and other cereals, egg yolk, meat, seafood and avocados; and B1, which can be found in foods such as yeast, pork, fish, nuts, rice, wheat germ, milk and dairy products and nuts.

It is also worth mentioning the antioxidant power of carotene (pre-vitamin A), present in carrots, watercress, spinach, red bell pepper, apricots, leeks, pumpkin, mango or salmon, among other foods, as well as flavonoids, which are found in blueberries, green tea, black tea, wine or dark chocolate, as well as in some fruits, such as grapes, strawberries, or bananas, and in plants such as eggplant and onions.
