Why does dry eye occur?

There is not always a recognizable cause of Dry Eye. Its prevalence increases with age, and is more frequent in menopausal women, in relation to hormonal changes. Other risk factors are the use of contact lenses, some eye surgeries, the use of monitors and some drugs such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, antihistamines, diuretics, etc. Sometimes, a systemic disease that produces Dry Eye can be identified, such as Sjögren's Syndrome (which associates dry mouth and other mucous membranes), rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune diseases.
